One of the chaps did something you should never do on a road in Morocco. He stopped to let someone cross the road who was half way across a pedestrian crossing. The car driver behind him was not expecting this insanity on a road, so was not paying attention and rear ended him. Luckily the impact was at low speed. The damage, he lost both rear indicators and his number plate, the bike stayed upright and he stayed on, it could have been worse.
We then headed of to a large Roman ruin at Volubilis. It is quite a large site and I had been there before,
So had seen it all. The sun was out and I really could not be bothered walking all the way to it, round it, and back again, so I had a mint tea and cleaned and lubed my chain while the others did the sight seeing.
See, it’s a long, long, long way from the car park.
We then headed off to Fes. It was a great road with sweeping corners and nice straights, great for having a blast. But it was not long before the fun came to a sudden stop. This road was like any single carriageway “A” road in the UK. Nice flat tarmac, good camber on the corners, all very nice. But in Morocco you can not relax for a moment. Coming round a fast right hander the straight road ahead looked a bit strange. As we approach we could see that our side of the road had collapsed and slid into the field! So we had to move into the oncoming traffic lane. Good job it was clear. Then about a mile further on, for around 100yards that tarmac ended and there was a concreat surface that undulated in every direction at the same time, standing prevented a very uncomfortable ride.
At the hotel in Fes we had the option of eating in or getting a taxi to the old town, so a few of us got a taxi in. The hotel is 5.5 miles from the old town, the cost of the taxi............ £1.70, and that was for three of us. Ok, ok, there were no seatbelts, the driver was smoking like there was no tomorrow, he had to keep the lumpy engine reving to stop it stalling and 1st gear was not working, but neather the less, you can not buy a coffe in london for £1.70 so great value.
Now I like old towns but I must admit I was not that impressed with Fes. It could have been that we were in the wrong bit, but we went through the Blue Gate as the hotel owner recommended as being the place to be.
So we had something to eat, had a wonder and then went back to the hotel.
Not quite sure where we are going tomorrow.
